Reluctant Cape hero found in S. Carolina

James Short Jr., 52, is nominated for the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission medal for saving his ailing neighbor, David Johnston Sr., 62, from his burning Cape Coral apartment seconds before Johnston's oxygen machine tank blew up.

A friend called Carnegie Hero Fund Commission officials this week to tell them where Short now lives after reading a story in The News-Press that detailed the commission couldn't find him.
"We got a letter off to him today," Jeffrey Dooley, investigations manager for the hero fund, said Wednesday. He said it will take several months of research to determine if Short qualifies for one of about 100 medals issued each year, along with cash awards of $5,000.
Short said he's honored to be considered, but he believes "anyone in their right mind would have done the same thing I did."
